Best Of Toronto

By: Christopher Turner

For those who feel frustrated when they walk into a boutique or a departments store and see nothing but the latest trends you’re in luck. If you love the "hunt" of vintage shopping… Toronto has an abundance of options. In nearly every district, shoppers can find a few shops and end up spending house in a fashion time machine. Of course the results can be both good and bad!

Here is our selection of the top ten vintage stops in the city!

Act Two Act Two
596 Mount Pleasant Road
(At Manor Road East)
(416) 487-2486
Monday to Saturday: 11:00am - 6:00pm

Head up Mount Pleasant and you will find Act Two home of vintage couture, evening wear and accessories galore at modest prices. Women can sort through the assortment of A-list designer gowns and bags while men can find a wide selection of suits and tuxedos. Keep your eyes open for great designer finds including: Armani, Canali, Chanel, Hugo Boss, Jil Sander, Lacroix, Michael Kors, Prada, Pucci and Yves Saint Laurent.

The Black Market Black Market Vintage Clothing
Black Market Clothing Store

- 319 Queen Street West: (416) 591-7945
and
Black Market Clothing MegaWarehouse
- 256a Queen Street West: (416) 599-5858
http://www.blackmarkettoronto.com
Monday to Friday: 11:00am - 7:00pm
Saturday: 10:00am - 7:00pm / Sunday: 11:00am - 6:00pm

Queen Street West is the original home of Toronto's second hand stores and the Black Market is the long standing fave of true vintage buffs. In fact there are two versions of the infamous store that house racks of used clothing, fine vintage and a ton of accessories. The second-floor store is small but is packed with cool denim and other finds. The second, larger shop is across the street housing tons of t-shirts and the biggest discounts. Added bonus… There is 50% off every Tuesday and Wednesday.

Courage My Love Courage My Love
14 Kensington Avenue
(At Dundas Street West)
(416) 979-1992
Monday to Friday: 11:30am - 6:00pm
Saturday: 11:00am - 6:00pm / Sunday: 1:00pm - 5:00pm

Courage My Love is definitely a Kensington Market fave. The owners ensure that the store lives up to its reputation by traveling the world in search of unique and amazing vintage finds, jewellery, sunglasses, knick knacks and much more. On a street that filled with second hand options this bohemian haven (which was established in 1975) is still the favored choice for some cheap and fun recycled clothing. The proof… Try stopping by on a weekend the place is always packed during prime shopping hours.

Exile Vintage Exile Vintage
- 20 Kensington Avenue: (416) 596-0827
and
- 62 Kensington Avenue: (416) 595-7199
http://exilevintage.com
Monday to Saturday: 10:00am - 7:00pm
Sunday: 10:00am - 6:00pm

Exile Vintage carries all the second hand finds you would expect from a shop in Kensington Market. This is actually hands down one of the better vintage shops on the strip. Down the street a second Exile has opened offering a smaller selection, but it's still worth a peek inside. The big draw here is the custom-made shirts. Shoppers wanting that truly retro-cheese look can search through the binders for their vintage iron-on transfer or have their own latest catch phrase emblazoned across your chest on basic T's from American Apparel. Plus the store is a great destination for Halloween and party wear. Think wigs, boas and fun fur galore.

Preloved Preloved
881 Queen Street West
(416) 504-8704
http://www.preloved.ca
Monday to Wednesday: 11:00am - 7:00pm / Thursday to Friday: 11:00am - 8:00pm
Saturday: 11:00am - 7:00pm / Sunday: 12:00 - 6:00pm

Preloved sadly lost their flagship store in the Queen West fire but as of August 8th they are open at their new location just across from Tinity Bellwoods between Type and Klaxon Howl. Look for more of what you loved from Preloved… Wicked vintage! Technically Preloved isn't a true vintage store, but it is made of vintage clothing and it is one of the coolest stops in the entire city. Thought of as a true jem by Vintage lovers this shop stands in a category all its own because the pieces you will find here are really one of a kind. Think of it like this: The shop's owners breathe new life into what other vintage shops sell. Cast off T-shirts, sweaters and pants are ripped apart and repurposed into amazing new and unique creations. Think of it almost like high end couture.

Second Nature Boutique
514 Mount Pleasant
(North of Davisville)
(416) 481-4924
http://www.secondnaturebtq.com
Monday to Saturday: 10:00am - 6:00pm

North of Davisville on Mount Pleasant shoppers will come across the Second Nature Boutique, a fabulous three floor destination for vintage finds. After 30+ years in business this uptown second hand store definitely gets it right. There's a great selection of designer labels, casual clothes and cool accessories all at decent prices. The non-stop flow of merchandise means there is always something new ready for your next visit.

The Cat's Meow The Cat's Meow
180 Avenue Road
(At Davenport Road)
(647) 435-5875
http://www.thecatsmeowcouture.com
Monday to Friday: 10:00am - 6:00pm
Saturday: 10:00am - 5:00pm / Sunday: 12:00 - 5:00pm

Since 2004 The Cat's Meow, and owner Louise Cooper, has been selling high-end vintage pieces in this little shop on Avenue. There is an impressive collection of heavenly designer finds and fun costume jewellery. Shoppers will find labels such as Balenciaga, Cavalli, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Hermes, Vivienne Westwood and more. Something that sets this little boutique apart from other vintage shops throughout the city is their up-to-date on-line store for those who can't make it in to shop. Sorry guys, this one is just for the ladies.

The Paperbag Princess The Paper Bag Princess
287 Davenport Road
(416) 925-2603
http://thepaperbagprincess.com
Monday to Friday: 11:00am - 7:00pm
Saturday: 11:00am - 6:00pm

Celeb drenched L.A. is the home of vintage guru Elizabeth Mason's first Paper Bag Princess boutique; but the Toronto location (which opened in 2002) lives up to the high standards set south of the border. Catering more towards high-end vintage shoppers, the little shop up near Bedford road is everything you would expect. The price range is higher than nearly every other vintage boutique in the city, but when you see the mint condition designer pieces you will understand why. Plus there is the impressive roster of serious fashionistas and celeb clients who help create the allure of sexy shop.

Tribal Rhythm
248 Queen Street West
(416) 595-5817
Monday to Saturday: 11:00am - 7:00pm
Sunday: 12:00 - 6:00pm

Heading down Queen West off Osgoode subway station one of the first stops along the strip shoppers will find Tribal Rhythm. Along with a great selection of vintage clothing which features a great selection for guys you can find imported Thai and Indian trinkets at reasonable prices. Plus this Queen West stop carries an assortment of new and trendy items (mostly accessories) to make the outfit complete.
