Fall In Toronto Guide
Get ready for some turkey!
The Canadian Thanksgiving holiday is officially observed on the second Monday of October. This year Thanksgiving falls on Monday October 12, 2009. While many will be getting together with friends or family to celebrate, relax and eat ... some will want to get out of the house and explore the city. Since Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday not everything will be open as usual.
Here’s a look at what is open and what is closed in the city on the Thanksgiving Day long weekend…
Saturday October 10 - Sunday October 11, 2009 The beginning of the Thanksgiving Long weekend will be business as usual for Toronto. Basically anything that would normally be open on the weekend will remain open this weekend.
Monday October 12, 2009 Thanksgiving is a legal statutory holiday which means most of the city will close it's doors for one day. Yup, most stores and business will be taking the day off. Expect most shopping centres, grocery stores, supermarkets, beer stores, the LCBO, banks, libraries and government offices to be closed... and finally there is no mail delivery on Thanksgiving Monday.
Of course there are some exceptions for those who really want to go shopping. On Monday stores along Yonge Street (between Richmond Street north to Grosvenor Street) will be open. That includes the Toronto Eaton Centre which will be open between 10:00am and 6:00pm. If you are strolling through Queen’s Quay or Yorkville you may find individual stores who may choose to open their doors. Other shopping centres just outside of the city will also be open. They include: Vaughan Mills from 10:00am - 7:00pm and the Pacific Mall in Markham from 11:00am until 8:00pm.
If you are heading out and about to do a little shopping or join in one of the many activities happening around the city today make sure to give yourself some extra time. The TTC and Go Transit will both be running on a holiday schedule.
